3 words to live by. 2016 version.

Three bags in hand, cell phone chiming, hair up in a sweaty ponytail, shove on some boots, and quick jog across the street hustling in to a(nother) meeting.  Don’t worry, I put on a cute sparkly headband to cover up the fact that I taught Spin class just three hours earlier.  I’m about to turn my phone on silent even though I’ll watch the screen light up in case it’s something “really” important.  And I smacked a little of my favorite Mary Kay Nourishine lipgloss on in Pink Parfait.  Not because it’s my favorite color, rather it lacks any sparkle but because it’s the first of six options I grabbed out of my purse.  The purse, of which, I really need to change out since I’ve been using it since August. AUGUST.  Like my birthday month.  Wow….1, 2, 3, (counting fingers) 4, 5, months ago. That was when I turned 29. Oh my gosh. I’m almost 29 and a half. Like….almost…30.  Holy crap! Well anyways, “Hey guys”, slide out the chair, “Happy New Year”, as a table of seven awaits me to join.

Yes, this is exactly my entrance into last week’s “3 words to live by in 2016” meeting went with a few comrades that I’ve been doing this for years with!  Can it be four years already since we started this tradition? Wow, it’s so neat to see the friendly faces!  Steve, Beth, Tony, Dean, Karlie, and some guy I don’t know.  Hmmm….looks familiar.  Nope, I got nothing.  “Hi, I’m Jessi!”, turns out he’s from R.C. Thomas.  Great company.  I remember hearing about them at a Social Media Breakfast in the last year.

So the point is, we come to this meeting, more like Happy Hour, each year to “reveal” our 3 words to live by for the upcoming year.  Prior to that, we explain our progress and rate our success on the 3 words we chose last year.  Well last year, my 3 words were Elevate, Finish, Cadillac.  I’ll link you to my blog on those words from last year.  Problem is, I came into this meeting with only ONE word chosen, ABUNDANCE.  And a vague list in my head, which is where most lists are stored, of potential other words.  It’s ok, I’m good under pressure.  I’ll be able to come up with something.  And I did.  I said my other two words were BUILD and EMPOWER.  So now, I need to really put some thought behind WHY those words came immediately to my subconscious mind. Let’s start with Wikipedia, always a solid resource.

ABUNDANCE.

Abundance may refer to:

In science and technology:

Abundance (economics), the opposite of scarcities
Abundance (ecology), the relative representation of a species in a community
Abundance (programming language), a Forth-like computer programming language
Abundance, a property of abundant numbers
chemistry
Abundance (chemistry), when a substance in a reaction is present in high quantities
Abundance of the chemical elements, a measure of how common elements are
Natural abundance, the natural prevalence of different isotopes of an element on Earth
Abundance of elements in Earth’s crust
In business:

Abundance Generation, a renewable energy investment platform
BUILD.

Build may refer to:

Engineering something
Construction
Physical body stature, especially muscle size; usually of the human body
Software build, a compiled version of software, or the process of producing it
Build (song) a 1987 song by The Housemartins
Build (developer conference), a Microsoft developer conference

EMPOWER.

Empowerment refers to policies and measures designed to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in the lives of people and in communities in order to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority. Empowerment refers both to the process of self-empowerment and to professional support of people, which enables them to overcome their sense of powerlessness and lack of influence, and to recognise and eventually use their resources and chances.

The term empowerment is also used for an accomplished state of self-responsibility and self-determination.

In social work, empowerment forms a practical approach of resource-oriented intervention. In the field of citizenship education and democratic education, empowerment is seen as a tool to increase the responsibility of the citizen. Empowerment is a key concept in the discourse on promoting civic engagement. Empowerment as a concept, which is characterized by a move away from a deficit-oriented towards a more strength-oriented perception, can increasingly be found in management concepts, as well as in the areas of continuing education and self-help.

Thank you, wikipedia, for those definitions.  Always helps to get the mind rolling.  And now for my thoughts on those 3 words for 2016:

ABUNDANCE.  To think, plan, create, act, have resources, friendships, networks, connections in abundance.  To believe abundantly, opposite of few.  To have unlimited ideas, to be creative in thought, to think outside of the box.  To find people that have vast territories, networks, experiences.  To believe in an infinite Faith that God has placed in my life.

BUILD.  To grow, to be, to find strength, to gain confidence, to share with others.  Most importantly, to give people the encouragement, wisdom, and faith to allow themselves to grow.  To build ideas, to build people, to create new events, new thought patterns.

EMPOWER.  To breathe belief and love into others’ around me.  To build confidence in women to chase their dreams.  To embrace others with a silent yet strong foundation to make them be better. To choose better. To believe the best for their lives.

I’ll make some more specific goals as I progress with these words in the next few weeks.  For now, I’ll let you ponder mine as you create your 3 words for 2016.
